Firethorne Gets Fit with New Personal Trainer

Katy/Fulshear – Nov 16, 2006. . . . . “It’s never too late to become fit,” proclaims Peggy Skaggs, named the first personal trainer of the new Firethorne Fitness Center. Certified by the world-renowned Cooper Institute in Dallas, Peggy is available as a fitness consultant to Firethorne residents to help them enhance their physical and emotional well-being.

One would never guess by looking at Peggy, today the picture of perfect fitness and health, that she had been severely overweight for almost 20 years of her adult life. “I know what it’s like to struggle,” said the 42-year-old, who starting putting on weight her freshman year in college. By age 37, she was at 185 pounds. “I had yo-yoed with my weight loss and gain for years – lose 30 pounds, gain 40 back, for instance. I always dressed frumpy and nothing fit,” she remembers.

In the summer of 2002, Peggy, at the urging of a close friend, began working out with a personal trainer from the recreation ministry of their church. She admits it was very embarrassing at first because she could not do one sit-up! However, she found the internal strength to keep going to workouts and soon started seeing the weight come off. Little by little, approximately one pound per week, she was losing weight. She also was doing strength training to firm her body and monitoring her food and food portion intake.

Firethorne General Manager Wayne Meyer was keen on having Peggy on-site at the Firethorne Fitness Center having watched her transformation as she has lost more than 50 pounds. She went from a size 18 to sleek size six. “Peggy Skaggs is truly an inspiration because she knows that if she can muster the discipline to work out and lose a significant amount of ‘excess baggage’, others can too. Plus she really has a passion for helping others achieve their weight-loss goals.”

Peggy already has been an inspiration to many people, including her husband, a former LSU baseball player who had weighed in at more than 350 pounds before starting an exercise and new eating regime two years ago. He has lost 140 pounds and can now lead an active life – hiking, biking and doing all kinds of outdoor activities with Peggy and their son that were unheard of at his previous weight and lifestyle. Her husband, who previously suffered from back and chronic hip problems and arthritis, is now a speed walker.

“We’re kindling the spirit of fitness at Firethorne!” said Peggy.
