The Milkman Comes to Firethorne

Katy/Fulshear – May 4, 2006 -- Remember when the milkman delivered milk to your very door? At Firethorne, West Houston’s newest master-designed community, he still does. In fact, the community has arranged for a local milkman to deliver a free gallon of milk to each resident’s door every week for the first six months the family lives there.
Firethorne’s first milk deliveries will begin Wednesday, May 10 at approximately 5 a.m. by the company “The Milkman Still Delivers,” Houston’s last-standing dairy home delivery service.

Veteran milkman Skip Hayes, 50, an anachronism with today’s surging fuel prices, has been delivering dairy products to Houston-area residents for the past 17 years. Firethorne marks his first full route in a master-planned community in the Katy area.

“It’s quite nostalgic, actually,” said Firethorne General Manager Wayne Meyer, describing Firethorne’s way of being neighborly and introducing its residents to Firethorne’s hometown charm. Upon move-in, new homeowners also receive a fresh-from-the-oven homemade pie from the legendary John & Ann’s Pie Shoppe of Katy, he added.
Hayes, a native of the dairy state of Wisconsin, is said to be the last milkman to deliver milk to homes in the Houston metropolitan area. He has regular routes in Memorial (he started his first route there in 1989 when gas was $1.12 per gallon), River Oaks, Briar Grove, Tanglewood, West University and Bellaire.

In addition to fresh dairy products, Hayes delivers fresh meats, seafood and produce.

Activity abounds at every turn at Firethorne, whose landmark is an 18-foot tall Firethorne sculpture at its entrance. The Visitors Center is open daily and homebuilding is bustling with 165 starts. There is a full-range of homes starting in the mid-$100s to the $800s for the 3,600 home sites planned.

Named for a resilient evergreen indigenous to the prairie, Firethorne blends with the best nature has to offer: 150 acres devoted to parks and recreational amenities highlighted by a 12-acre lake with surrounding greenbelt, hike and bike trails, parks and playgrounds, discovery-rich wildlife observation area, a natural bird habitat and more. Amenities will include a multi-level swim center, sports fields, tennis courts, a competitive swim center, plus a neighborhood Community Center with a meeting room and fully equipped fitness facility.
